Streetlight Trees//Dr. Yen-Hsun Su
Streetlights are a necessary part of the urban streetscape and urban nightlife. Instead of using traditional streetlights, what if trees were used to produce light? Dr. Yen-Hsun Su from Taiwan’s National Cheng Kung University found when gold nanoparticles are added with leaves of the Bacopa caroliniana, it induces a red emission of chlorophyll. The tree is very prominent in the Southern United States and could be an easily implemented strategy.  Its a win-win situation, we replace our streetlights with trees to provide light, reduce the electricity required, and absorb CO2. We would need to get use to the red glow.
